Learn to compare Views Across Shorts-Longs and Live Videos

Are you the type of YouTuber who loves creating different kinds of content? You know, the one who embraces every format, from horizontal videos to vertical ones and even YouTube live streams? If that sounds like you, you’re a well-rounded creator who boldly goes where most haven’t before (yes, a little Star Trek reference there). And that’s a great quality because experimenting on YouTube can lead you to discover what works for you. Learn to compare views and what works best for you.

But here’s the thing: with all the content you’re creating, you now have more videos to analyze and track performance. Naturally, you might wonder how each format compares with the others. How many people are watching your live streams versus your regular videos? Or, interestingly, what percentage of viewers tend to your Shorts compared to your live streams?

Well, guess what? YouTube has covered you with a new panel called “viewers across formats.” This panel lets you compare viewership across all video types, including YouTube Shorts, long-form videos, and live streams. It’s a fantastic tool to gain insights into what’s happening on your channel.

To access the “Viewers Across Formats” panel, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the YouTube Studio and click on Analytics in the left navigation bar.
  2. Select the Content tab.
  3. Scroll down until you find “Viewers Across Formats” on the right side of the screen. Keep in mind that it only shows data from the last 28 days.

Now, why is this data important? Well, it helps you understand what you excel at on YouTube. It reveals opportunities for cross-promotion between different content types and highlights improvement areas.

For example, let’s talk about regular videos, followed by Shorts, and finally, live streams. We can cross-promote our Shorts and long-form videos since there’s an overlap of viewers who enjoy both types.

So, how can you make the most of this data?

One strategy is recommending a long-form video in every YouTube Short’s description or comment section. You can also create Shorts and long-form videos that complement each other, offering related but fresh information to attract more views.

On the flip side, if you notice that a particular content type isn’t performing as well, it doesn’t necessarily mean you should stop creating it. Each format has its unique value; sometimes, lower views on certain content types can still contribute to your overall impact.

Ultimately, this panel helps you narrow your focus and understand what your viewers gravitate toward the most. You can go all-in on the content types that resonate with your audience or explore further to find the perfect mix.

So, keep experimenting, analyzing, and refining your content strategy on YouTube. Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, but with the right insights, you’ll be well on your way to success!
